Groundwater Cleanup Program Manager Bios

Photo of Steve SlatenSteve Slaten is the Remedial Project Manager for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. As Project Manager, Steve is responsible for the cleanup resulting from past waste disposal practices at the JPL site which have impacted the area’s drinking water aquifer.

He has dedicated his career to cleanup issues and used his skills in developing cooperative partnerships with regulatory agencies, local governments and public stakeholders to conduct successful cleanup and waste disposal practices.

His extensive background in environmental cleanup activities includes experience at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Steve received a B.S. in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin and now lives in Altadena, California



Photo of Merrilee FellowsMerrilee Fellows is Manager of Community Involvement for NASA's Groundwater Cleanup Program at the Jet Propulsion in Pasadena, California. She also serves as NASA Public Affairs Officer for various space exploration activities, including NASA's Stardust Mission and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Prior to joining NASA, Merrilee worked on various legal, academic and environmental positions. She served as assistant city attorney for a number of Southern California cities and assistant general counsel to water and sanitary districts. Her environmental expertise includes working for The Nature Conservancy and Luz, a company that at the time was the world’s largest producer of solar thermal electricity. In addition, Merrilee taught environmental assessment at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

She has a B.A. in Environmental Studies, an M.A. in Environmental Planning and a J.D. with an emphasis on environmental law. A Pasadena resident for over 25 years, Merrilee is active in various local civic issues.
